V-Flat

A versatile light-shaping tool used to bounce or block light, ensuring professional-grade shadow control in product and fashion photography.

A V-flat is an essential light-shaping tool consisting of two large, lightweight boards (typically foam core) hinged together to form a "V" shape. In high-end e-commerce photography, V-flats serve two primary purposes: reflecting light to soften shadows (using the white side) or absorbing light to create deeper contrast and prevent spill (using the black side, often referred to as negative fill).

At JU Productions, V-flats are a staple across our global studio hubs in Singapore, the United States, and China. They are instrumental in maintaining lighting consistency for our Catalog Photography and Scheduled Lookbook® services. By precisely controlling how light interacts with a subject, our production teams can ensure that every product—from matte apparel to reflective accessories—meets the rigorous standards of global retail platforms.

  • Reflective Use: Bounces light back onto the subject to fill in dark areas without adding new light sources.
  • Negative Fill: Uses the black side to add definition and shape, particularly important in Creative Photography.
  • Flagging: Blocks stray light from hitting the camera lens or specific parts of the set to prevent flare.

Why It Matters

V-flats are critical for achieving brand consistency. They allow photographers to manipulate light manually and subtly, ensuring that product textures are accurately represented and that the mood of a Scheduled Lookbook® remains uniform across different shooting sessions and global locations.

Examples

1. In a jewelry shoot, using a white V-flat to wrap soft light around a reflective gold watch. 2. In a fashion lookbook, using a black V-flat to prevent light from bouncing off a white studio wall, thereby preserving the rich color of a dark fabric.

How to Apply

Brands should ensure their production partners use V-flats when a 'natural yet polished' look is required. For global campaigns handled via JU Productions' hubs, V-flats help us match the lighting geometry of previously shot assets, ensuring a seamless aesthetic across your entire digital storefront.

Common Mistakes

Placement too far from the subject, which diminishes the reflective effect; using damaged or dirty boards that can introduce unwanted color casts or textures into the reflection; and neglecting 'negative fill,' resulting in flat, uninteresting images.

Pro Tip

When shooting high-end fashion for a Mini-campaign, use the black side of a V-flat close to the model’s shadow side. This 'negative fill' adds sophisticated depth and contour that cannot be easily replicated in post-production.
